Affecting Cancer
Together

“Affecting Cancer Together™ (ACT) is a health outreach initiative by the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. ACT was developed to help address the cancer disease burden experienced in Indiana and its primary focus is cancer awareness, education, prevention, and connecting people to early detection screening services. This program has been launched in Indianapolis, Indiana, specifically in Marion County. The goal of ACT is to decrease cancer health disparities, which could improve cancer incidence and mortality rates in Indiana.

We are a cancer program, however we are currently launching with prostate cancer to decrease health disparities experienced by all men in Indiana, especially African American men. Moreover, ACT is a cancer education program that utilizes a construct which barbers and barbershops act as lay health motivators in their communities primarily educating their clientele, family, and friends about prostate cancer, discussing risks of developing prostate cancer, and when appropriate encouraging men to get screened for prostate cancer. ACT also provides and connects men to free prostate cancer screenings through partnerships with health and medical facilities in Indiana.”
